McKinley Named Executive Director of Global Communications

On Sunday, August 4, 2024, the Office of the Presiding Bishop of the Church of God of Prophecy announced the appointment of Bishop Dr. Shaun McKinley as the executive director of the newly created division of Global Communications, effective September 1, 2024. The announcement came at the conclusion of the denomination’s 102nd International Assembly, which brought together over 10,000 attendees from 130 nations to Orlando, Florida. The division of Global Communications is the first major restructuring of the International Offices since 1996.

The creation of the division of Global Communications was announced during the presiding bishop’s biennial address two days prior to the appointment. “Communication is central to the work and ministry of the church and requires Spirit-empowered strategic thinking and thoughtful organization,” said Presiding Bishop Tim Coalter in his address. “Therefore, following this Assembly,” he continued, ”the various communication entities of the International Offices will be restructured. As we unite our Editorial and Art Departments, World Language, Information Technology, Media Services, Web Design, and Social Media Platforms under one leadership umbrella, this will provide the environment for greater collaboration, cohesion, strategic planning, and accountability.”

McKinley has previously served as Director of Accredited Ministries Development and currently International Director of Children’s Ministries for the denomination. He has also served as the administrative liaison to the Office of the Presiding Bishop for seventeen years.

“This Church has a story worth telling,” said McKinley in a smaller gathering of the denomination’s national bishops. “Of all the aspects of this new Global Communications department, perhaps the one I am most excited about is that we will be the chief storytellers for this movement.” He continued, “We have a glorious past, remarkable present, and a magnificent future. God has entrusted vision to our leadership and this team will serve to communicate that vision and make it plain. We envision helping our churches understand the times in which we serve, so that we may know what to do now and prepare for the Church of tomorrow.” He concluded his comments with, “We will also work to provide resources to help churches and ministries be equipped to personally share God’s desire for all to come to salvation and experience His transformational love.”

McKinley is a graduate of the University of the Cumberlands, earning a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies with a concentration in Ministry and Missions (2021). He also holds a Master of Business Administration in Marketing (Bryan College, 2014) and a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations (Montana State University, 2000).

McKinley serves as an adjunct undergraduate and graduate instructor with Oral Roberts University (Tulsa, OK), Lee University (Cleveland, TN), Bryan College (Dayton, TN), Trevecca Nazarene University (Nashville, TN), as well as Belhaven University (Jackson, MS), where he was recognized in 2019 with the University’s Faculty Excellence Award. In 2024, he accepted an appointment with the University of Tennessee at Knoxville’s Center for Education and Lifelong Learning (Knoxville, TN), focusing on the University’s Digital Marketing programs.

Growing up in a pastoral family, McKinley has been active in ministry for much of his life. For the past 33 years, he has served in multiple roles, including associate pastor and later children’s pastor of the Peerless Road Church in Cleveland, Tennessee (2004-2006), administrative assistant in COGOP International Children’s Ministries (2002-2003), and as age-level editor (preschool through elementary ages) for One Accord Sunday School curriculum (2009-2012).

McKinley was ordained a bishop with the Church of God of Prophecy in 2018. He is the secretary of the Historical Society of Church of God Movements, having served the Society as president for three terms. He has also served on the denomination’s International Assembly Task Force for 18 years.

McKinley is passionate about serving the Church and equipping leaders. He has had many opportunities to serve in professional and ministry roles, where this passion has been expressed and developed. He has traveled much of the United States and 59 nations, ministering and presenting practical training to children’s ministers, youth ministers, and church communicators.

In addition to his executive director responsibilities, McKinley was also appointed to the Church of God of Prophecy Corporate Board of Directors, Spirit and Life Seminary Board of Directors, International Assembly Task Force, and the International Assembly Expense Committee.
